Reading

The greatest part of a writer’s time is spent in reading, in order to write; a man will turn over half a library to make one book.

When I say reading, I don't mean reading craft books, although you should definitely do that, too, but I mean reading novels. Study what other authors do. What works in this book or that book? How did the author construct what works? What do you see in others' works that you would like to avoid?
